International Pronouns Day, celebrated on the third Wednesday of October each year, seeks to make respecting, sharing, and educating about personal pronouns commonplace. Referring to people by the pronouns they determine for themselves is basic to human dignity. Being referred to by the wrong pronouns particularly affects transgender and gender nonconforming people. Together, we can transform society to celebrate people’s multiple, intersecting identities.
This day provides an opportunity for Queensland Government employees to recognise support transgender and gender non-conforming colleagues by normalising the sharing of pronouns. You are encouraged to host activities including awareness and education within agencies about the distinction between sex and gender to include pronouns in your signature blocks and to educate co-workers about inclusion.
Queensland Government employees can get involved by hosting morning teas, or contacting the LGBTIQ+ Steering Committee for information on webinars and online resources.
